Future IIMer, if you're reading this, you're likely thinking about cracking IPMAT. Maybe you're just starting, or perhaps you're looking for a fresh perspective. I've been there, and I know the questions that swirl in your mind. This is exactly what I would do if I were starting my IPMAT preparation from scratch today.

Here's what you'll learn:

  1. The crucial first step on Day 1 of your IPMAT journey.
  2. A detailed sectional strategy for Quantitative Aptitude and Verbal Ability.
  3. How to build consistency and avoid common mistakes that waste time.

TL;DR: My IPMAT Starting Strategy

Don't wait. Take a full mock test on Day 1 to understand your baseline, no matter how low the score. Then, focus on building strong basics with consistency, aiming for 50 questions per chapter. Develop a solid sectional strategy for Quant (easy to hard topics) and Verbal (vocab, RC, grammar). Most importantly, avoid comparing your progress with anyone else; your journey is unique.

If I were starting IPMAT today: day 1 strategy

The first thing I would do, without any hesitation or prior study, is take a full-length mock test. Yes, on Day 1. This might sound counterintuitive. You might feel unprepared, worried about a low score, or think it's a waste of a mock.

But here's the truth: that Day 1 mock is your baseline. It tells you exactly where you stand. It shows your natural strengths and weaknesses before any coaching or self-study kicks in. I remember a friend, Divyansh, who did this. His scores were very low, but he knew his starting point. That clarity is invaluable.

Knowing your current level helps you plan your studies effectively. It lets you see which sections need urgent attention and which ones you might have a natural aptitude for. It's not about the score; it's about the diagnosis.

Sectional strategy for ipmat iim indore & rohtak

Once you have your baseline, it's time to create a focused attack plan for each section. IPMAT IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak have distinct patterns, but the core aptitude areas remain the same: Quantitative Aptitude and Verbal Ability. Here's how I would break down my strategy:

Section Key Focus Areas (Video Strategy) Approach
Quantitative Aptitude Algebra, Percentage, Ratio, Average, Time & Work (Easy Topics) Master fundamental concepts. Aim for high accuracy and speed. These topics form the backbone of your Quant score.
Geometry, Number System, Modern Math (Medium Topics) Build a deeper understanding. Practice a wider variety of problem types. These require more conceptual clarity and problem-solving techniques.
Permutations & Combinations, Probability (Hard Topics) Understand the core concepts. Attempt these only after securing easy and medium topics, and if time permits during the exam. Don't let them intimidate you.
Verbal Ability Vocabulary (30 words daily), Reading Comprehension (2-3 RCs daily), Grammar Consistent daily practice is key. Use flashcards or apps for vocabulary. Read diverse articles for RC. Reinforce grammar rules through dedicated practice and error identification.
Overall Daily Practice Mock tests, analysis, consistency Integrate daily study blocks for both Quant and Verbal. Regularly review mistakes from practice and mocks. Build stamina for the actual exam. For Quantitative Aptitude, my initial two months would be dedicated purely to mastering the basics. No advanced questions, no rush. Just solidifying every concept. From each chapter, I would solve at least 50 questions. This builds confidence and ensures thorough understanding before moving to tougher problems.

Verbal Ability demands daily dedication. Building vocabulary takes time; commit to learning 30 new words every day. Read 2-3 Reading Comprehension passages daily, focusing on understanding the central idea and tone, not just finding answers. Revisit grammar rules constantly and apply them in practice questions. Strong verbal skills are crucial for both IPMAT and eventually, your IIM journey.

The power of consistency & smart planning

Many aspirants jump straight into complex problems or try to cover too many topics at once. This leads to superficial learning. My approach would be different: focus on depth over breadth, especially in the initial phase. For the first two months, it's strictly about building a strong foundation in all subjects.

Consistency beats sporadic bursts of effort every single time. A smart daily routine, even if it's just 3-4 dedicated hours, is far more effective than an all-nighter once a week. Divide your time wisely between Quant, Verbal, and Logical Reasoning, ensuring you touch upon all areas regularly. This steady progress builds momentum and prevents burnout.

After building your basics, integrate mock tests strategically. Take one every 1-2 weeks, followed by thorough analysis. Don't just look at the score; understand why you got certain questions wrong and how you could have approached them better. This analysis is where the real learning happens. It helps refine your strategy and improve time management.

What I learned from my mistakes (and you can too)

One of the biggest mistakes I made during my own preparation was constantly comparing myself to others. I would look at what my friends were studying, which topics they were acing, and then try to adjust my own plan to match theirs. This is a trap.

"That day it hit me that I was just comparing. I wasn't actually studying."

Your IPMAT journey is unique. What works for one person might not work for you. You have different strengths, different weaknesses, and learn at your own pace. Spending time worrying about what others are doing is time you could be spending on your own progress. This realization was a game-changer for me.

Focus inward. Trust your process. Stick to your plan, adapt it based on your mock analysis, and celebrate your small wins. The five points I've shared today aren't things someone taught me; they are lessons I learned the hard way through my own mistakes. By learning from them, you can streamline your preparation and stay ahead.

FAQs

How should I start my IPMAT preparation from scratch?+

Begin by taking a full-length mock test on Day 1 to establish your baseline. This helps identify your strengths and weaknesses. Then, dedicate the first two months to building strong basics in all subjects, solving at least 50 questions per chapter, and practicing verbal ability daily.

What is an effective daily study routine for IPMAT?+

An effective routine prioritises consistency. Allocate dedicated slots for Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Ability, and Logical Reasoning. For example, 2 hours for Quant, 1 hour for Verbal, and regular practice for LR. Crucially, integrate daily vocabulary learning (30 words) and reading comprehension (2-3 passages).

How important are mock tests in IPMAT preparation?+

Mock tests are extremely important, not just for scoring, but for diagnosis and strategy refinement. Take one on Day 1, and then regularly (e.g., every 1-2 weeks) after building basics. Always follow a mock test with thorough analysis to understand mistakes and improve your approach, time management, and accuracy.

Should I compare my IPMAT preparation progress with other aspirants?+

No, avoid comparing your IPMAT preparation progress with others. Every aspirant's journey, strengths, and weaknesses are unique. Focus on your own study plan, adapt it based on your personal mock test analysis, and track your individual improvement. Comparison can lead to unnecessary stress and distraction from your own goals.
