You cleared the IPMAT written test. Congratulations. But the race isn't over. In fact, the most critical part just began. Your IPMAT score was the key to the door; now you have to prove you belong in the room. The Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) determine your final admission.

This is where your personality, communication skills, and clarity of thought are tested. Let's break down how you can convert your call into a final admit.

Stage Weightage (Approx.) Key Focus
IPMAT Score 65% Clearing sectional & overall cutoffs
Personal Interview (PI) 35% Confidence, communication, profile fit
WAT Qualifying Stage Clear, structured writing on a given topic

Note: Weightages are based on past trends and can be adjusted by IIM Indore.

You've cleared the cutoff. now what?

First things first. If you've crossed the minimum cutoff, you'll get an email from IIM Indore. Log in to the official website with your credentials to check your result. The next immediate step is to fill out a detailed interview form.

This isn't just a formality. The form includes a section for a personal Statement of Purpose (SOP), which usually has two specific questions. What you write here forms the foundation of your interview. The panel will have this form in front of them, and their first questions will likely come directly from your answers. Be extremely careful and thoughtful while writing it.

Your answers reveal your self-awareness, motivations, and writing skills. Don't rush it. Draft, redraft, and get feedback before submitting. This document will either make your interview a smooth conversation or a difficult cross-examination.

Decoding the WAT: common topics and strategy

The Written Ability Test (WAT) is designed to check your ability to think on your feet and structure your thoughts coherently. You'll be given a topic and about 20-30 minutes to write a short essay.

Common WAT topics fall into a few buckets:

  • Current Affairs: Recent national and international events. Examples could be related to the Indian economy, new tech like AI, or global geopolitical shifts.
  • Social Issues: Topics like gender equality, climate change, or the role of social media.
  • Abstract Topics: These are philosophical or creative prompts like "Red is a colour" or "The number zero". They test your creativity and ability to build an argument from scratch.

Your strategy should be simple: structure over everything. Spend the first 2-3 minutes creating a mental outline: introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs with distinct points, and a conclusion. Your goal is to present a logical, well-written piece, not to write a perfect literary work.

The personal interview: question patterns to master

This is the final showdown. The panel, usually comprising IIM Indore professors and alumni, wants to see if you are a good fit for their institution. They are judging you on confidence, clarity, and authenticity. Forget mugged-up answers; they can see right through them.

Here are the question categories you must prepare for:

  1. Personal Questions: The classic "Tell me about yourself". This is your chance to set the tone. Prepare a 90-second script that covers your background, your academic interests, a key achievement, and why you are interested in IPM. Other questions include your strengths, weaknesses, hobbies, and long-term goals.

  2. Academic Questions: They will grill you on your Class 11 and 12 subjects, especially the ones you scored well in (or poorly in). If you say you like Physics, be ready for a follow-up question on Newton's laws. Be thorough with the basics of your core subjects.

  3. Current Affairs & General Knowledge: You are expected to be aware of what's happening in the country and the world. Read a good newspaper daily. Focus on major business news, political developments, and significant scientific breakthroughs.

  4. Why IPM? Why IIM Indore?: This is a mandatory question. You need a solid, genuine answer. Talk about your interest in management, the unique 5-year integrated structure, and specific aspects of IIM Indore's curriculum or campus life that attract you.

Beyond words: body language and delivery

How you say something is just as important as what you say. In an online or offline interview, your non-verbal cues matter immensely. The panel is observing your confidence and composure.

Maintain a straight but relaxed posture. Keep eye contact with the panelists to show you are engaged and confident. Avoid fidgeting with your hands or hair. When you speak, do so clearly and at a moderate pace. It's okay to take a pause for a few seconds to structure your thoughts before answering a tricky question.

Your delivery should be enthusiastic but not over-the-top. A genuine smile can go a long way in building rapport with the interviewers. Remember, they are looking for future managers who are calm and composed under pressure.

Your month-long practice plan

Don't wait until the last week. A strong interview performance is built over time. If you have a score that's competitive but not exceptionally high, say around 140 marks (e.g., 32 in Quant SA, 36 in Quant MCQ, 24 in Verbal), your interview performance becomes the deciding factor. You have to fight for your seat.

Here's a simple plan:

  • Week 1: Finalise your SOP and personal answers. Write down answers to all standard PI questions and refine them.
  • Week 2: Deep dive into your academics and current affairs. Revise Class 12 concepts and read the newspaper daily, making notes.
  • Week 3: Start mock interviews. Give at least 3-4 mocks with experienced mentors who can provide honest feedback. This is the most crucial step.
  • Week 4: Work on the feedback from your mocks. Polish your answers, work on your body language, and stay calm.

FAQs

What is a good score in IPMAT for an IIM Indore interview call?+

The cutoff score for an IIM Indore interview call varies each year based on the exam's difficulty and the number of applicants. Based on past trends, a score in the range of 130-150 has been competitive. However, you must clear both sectional and overall cutoffs to receive a call.

What kind of questions are asked in the IIM Indore IPM interview?+

The interview questions are comprehensive. They typically cover personal topics ('Tell me about yourself', strengths, weaknesses), academics (from your Class 11/12 subjects), your reasons for choosing the IPM program, and your awareness of current affairs and general knowledge.

Is there negative marking in the IIM Indore interview or WAT?+

No, there is no negative marking in the Personal Interview (PI) or the Written Ability Test (WAT). However, your performance is evaluated qualitatively. A poorly structured essay or an incoherent answer in the interview will negatively affect your overall score, which is based on factors like communication, clarity, and content.
