Most IPMAT aspirants get this wrong. They think clearing the written exam is the final boss, but it's just the start of the real game.

Once the IPMAT Result 2026 is out, the focus shifts entirely to the Personal Assessment stage, which includes a Writing Ability Test (WAT) and a Personal Interview (PI). Your aptitude test score got you a call; your personality and communication will get you the final seat at IIM Indore.

TL;DR: Your IIM Indore Interview Game Plan

  1. Check Your Result: As soon as the shortlist is out, check your status on the official IIM Indore website.
  2. Fill The Form Carefully: You'll get a detailed form asking for personal details and two SOP-style questions. Your answers here will direct your entire PI.
  3. Master Common Questions: Prepare solid answers for standard PI questions like "Tell me about yourself", "Why IPM?", and your strengths/weaknesses.
  4. Practice WAT: Write on a mix of current affairs, social issues, and abstract topics. Time yourself.
  5. Focus on Delivery: Confidence, clarity, and body language are just as important as your answers.

The first step: decoding the interview call & form

After you clear the IPMAT Indore cutoff, you won't just get an interview date. You'll first need to fill out a detailed application form on the IIM Indore portal. This isn't just a formality; it's the first piece of data the interview panel gets about you.

This form will ask for your personal details, academic history, and two crucial long-form questions. These questions are your Statement of Purpose (SOP). They might ask about your motivations for joining the IPM programme or a significant life experience. Treat these questions with extreme seriousness. Your written answers will almost certainly be the starting point of your personal interview.

Common WAT topics you must prepare

The Writing Ability Test (WAT) is designed to check your thought process, clarity, and writing skills under pressure. You'll typically get around 20-30 minutes to write a short essay. The topics can be broadly categorised.

  • Current Affairs: Anything from the G20 summit and India's economic policy to the rise of AI or recent geopolitical events.
  • Social Issues: Topics like the New Education Policy (NEP), climate change, gender equality, or the role of social media in society.
  • Abstract Topics: These are designed to test creativity. Expect prompts like "The colour blue", "Zero", or "A rolling stone gathers no moss".

To prepare, read the editorial sections of good newspapers daily. Practice writing one essay every two days on a random topic from the list above. Focus on structuring your thoughts: introduction, body paragraphs with examples, and a concise conclusion.

Cracking the personal interview (pi) question patterns

The PI is a conversation to see if you are a good fit for IIM Indore. The panel wants to understand your personality, motivations, and general awareness. Questions usually fall into a few key buckets.

Here's a breakdown of what to expect:

Question Category Sample Questions What They Are Testing
Personal / HR "Tell me about yourself.", "Why do you want to do an IPM?", "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" Your self-awareness, clarity of goals, and honesty.
Profile-Based "You're from Jaipur, what are its main economic drivers?", "I see you play chess, who is your favourite player and why?" Your curiosity, depth of interest in your own hobbies, and awareness of your surroundings.
Academics "Explain the Law of Demand.", "What is the difference between a permutation and a combination?" Your grasp of Class 11 & 12 fundamentals. They don't expect you to be a professor, but you must know the basics.
General Awareness "What is your opinion on the recent farmer protests?", "Can you name the current Chief Justice of India?" How updated you are with the world around you. They are looking for informed opinions, not just facts.

Body language and delivery: the unspoken score

How you say something is often more important than what you say. The interview panel is observing your non-verbal cues from the moment you enter the room (or log in to the Zoom call).

Maintain a confident posture, sit up straight, and keep your hands on the table or your lap. Make eye contact with all the panellists. When you speak, do so with clarity and at a moderate pace. It's okay to take a few seconds to structure your thoughts before answering a difficult question. A thoughtful pause is better than a rushed, incoherent answer.

Your 4-week interview prep plan

Don't try to cram everything in the last few days. A structured approach works best.

  • Week 1: Introspection & Content Building. Write down answers to all the common HR questions. Think deep about your goals, strengths, and life experiences. Finalise your answers for the two SOP questions in the form.
  • Week 2: Academic & GK Revision. Quickly revise the core concepts of your Class 12 subjects. Spend 30-45 minutes every day reading up on the last 6 months of major national and international news.
  • Week 3: Mock Interviews. This is critical. Do at least 3-5 mock interviews. The first can be with a mirror, the next with a friend or family member, and at least two with experienced mentors who can give you honest, actionable feedback.
  • Week 4: Refinement. Based on the feedback from your mocks, refine your answers and work on your delivery. Practice your introduction until it's smooth and natural. Stay calm and confident.
