First, the idea that IPMAT is a "mini-CAT". This is wrong. IPMAT math is based on Class 9-12 concepts. You don't need to solve ultra-difficult CAT-level questions. Second, and perhaps more dangerous, is neglecting the Verbal Ability (VA) section. Students think, "English is easy, I'll manage." This is a classic blunder. VA is often the kingmaker in IPMAT. It has the highest weightage, and a low score here can single-handedly disqualify you, even with a brilliant Quant score. Take it seriously from day one.
