Most IPMAT aspirants get this wrong. They think you need two years of gruelling prep to get into an IIM right after school.

The brutal truth: what 90 days really means

Let's be clear. Cracking IPMAT in 90 days while juggling your Class 12 boards is tough. It's a sprint, not a marathon. You don't have the luxury to master every single topic.

Your success depends on ruthless prioritisation. You will have to strategically ignore low-yield topics and focus intensely on what gets you marks. This is about exam strategy, not becoming a maths professor. Your biggest challenge will be managing time between Board exam prep and IPMAT, a task that requires military-level discipline.

Your 90-day game plan: A phase-by-phase breakdown

A random approach will fail. You need a structured plan that builds momentum. We've broken down the 90 days into three distinct phases, each with a clear objective.

This isn't about studying 12 hours a day. It's about 4-5 hours of focused, smart work.

| Phase (Days) | Quantitative Ability Focus | Verbal Ability Focus | Key Action | | :—- | :—- | :—- | :—- | | Days 1-30 | Arithmetic (Percentages, TSD, P&L), Algebra basics, Number Systems. | Build reading habit (editorials), basic grammar rules, start Norman Lewis' Word Power. | Foundation First: Focus on concept clarity. Don't touch mocks yet. | | Days 31-60 | Permutations & Combinations, Probability, Geometry, Logarithms. | Practice Reading Comprehension passages daily, Para Jumbles, Sentence Correction. | Apply & Analyse: Start taking 1-2 full-length mocks per week. Identify weak areas. | | Days 61-90 | Revise all high-yield topics, focus on speed maths for SAQ section. | Revise vocabulary, intensive practice of all question types, work on reading speed. | Intense Revision: Take 3-4 mocks per week. Focus entirely on analysis and strategy refinement. |

Sectional strategy for the time-crunched aspirant

You can't be a master of all trades in 90 days. You need to be a specialist who knows where the marks are. This means understanding the IPMAT Sectional vs Overall Cutoff dynamics.

Quantitative Ability (MCQ & SA): This section sinks most aspirants. Don't try to complete the entire syllabus. Your hit list should be Arithmetic (TSD, Work, Percentages), Algebra (Equations, Inequalities), and Number Systems. If you have time, master Permutations, Combinations, and Probability, as these are frequently tested. For the Short Answer section, accuracy is everything because there's no negative marking.

Verbal Ability: This is your rank booster. The entire section hinges on your reading ability. Make reading newspaper editorials a non-negotiable daily habit. For vocabulary, one chapter of 'Word Power Made Easy' per day is a realistic goal. Focus practice on RC passages, Para Jumbles, and Sentence Correction. These three areas make up the bulk of the paper.

Mocks are your mirror, not just practice

Stop treating mocks like a simple quiz. In a 90-day plan, mocks are your primary feedback tool. After every single mock, you must spend at least 2-3 hours analysing it.

Ask yourself three questions for every wrong answer:

  1. Was it a concept gap? (I didn't know the formula/theory).
  2. Was it a silly mistake? (Calculation error, misread the question).
  3. Was it a time management issue? (I knew how to solve it but ran out of time).

Your entire strategy for the next week will be based on these answers. If you need a deeper dive, check out our guide on IPMAT Mock Test Strategy.

Balancing boards and IPMAT: the non-negotiable

Ignoring your Board exams is a recipe for disaster. A good Class 12 score is crucial for your profile and is part of the final selection composite score for IIMs. The key is to find the overlap.

Your Board prep for Maths directly helps with IPMAT Quant. Your English Board prep strengthens your fundamentals for Verbal Ability. Dedicate specific, non-negotiable time slots for each. For example, 3 hours of IPMAT prep in the morning and 4 hours of Board prep in the evening. This compartmentalisation prevents burnout and ensures both goals are met.

Success in 90 days isn't about studying 18 hours a day; it's about studying the right 20% of the syllabus for 80% of the marks.

FAQs

Is it realistic to crack IPMAT Indore with only 3 months of preparation?+

It's challenging but possible if you have a strong maths foundation from Class 10 and 11. Your focus must be on smart work, high-yield topics, and aggressive mock analysis, not on covering 100% of the syllabus.

How many mock tests should I take in the last 90 days?+

Aim for a minimum of 15-20 full-length mocks. Start with one per week and increase the frequency to 3-4 per week in the final month. The analysis of each mock is more important than the number you take.

Should I focus on IPMAT Indore or IPMAT Rohtak if I'm starting late?+

IPMAT Rohtak has a slightly more predictable pattern and includes a Logical Reasoning section, which can be high-scoring. If your higher maths is weak, Rohtak might be a more achievable target. However, prepare for both and decide based on your mock scores.
