If you're entering Class 11 in 2026, here's something most of your batchmates won't realise for another year: your IIM entrance exam already has a date. You'll pass Class 12 in 2028, which makes IPMAT 2028 your exam — and you're standing at the single best starting point any IPMAT aspirant ever gets. Twenty-four months of runway.
Here's how to use it, future IIMer.
Why Class 11 Is the Ideal Start
IPMAT rewards two things: deep fundamentals and trained exam temperament. Both take time, and neither can be crammed.
Students who start in Class 12 compress concept-building, practice volume and mock analysis into ten frantic months — alongside boards. Students who start in Class 11 split the same work into a calm two-year arc: concepts in year one, intensity in year two. Same syllabus, totally different stress level, and a measurably better shot at the score you need.
There's a bonus most people miss: IPMAT-level Quant and Verbal training directly upgrades your school performance too, and your Class 12 boards matter for IIM eligibility checks and other UG entrances you'll write as backups.
Know Your Exam: IPMAT Indore Format
| Section | Questions | Marking | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Ability — Short Answer (SA) | 15 | +4, no negative | 40 min |
| Quantitative Ability — MCQ | 30 | +4 / −1 | 40 min |
| Verbal Ability — MCQ | 45 | +4 / −1 | 40 min |
Three separately-timed sections, 90 questions, 120 minutes total. The SA section has no negative marking — every one of those 15 questions is a free attempt, which makes SA accuracy one of the highest-ROI skills you can build over two years.
What Scores Actually Get IIM Calls
IIM Indore's overall cutoff (General category) over the last five cycles: 175 (2022), 176 (2023), 172 (2024), 164 (2025), 166 (2026). The band is stable — plan your preparation around clearing 175 and you're building a safe margin, not chasing a moving target.
Sectional minimums apply too (2025 General: 24 in QA-SA, 28 in QA-MCQ, 112 in Verbal), so a lopsided "I'll just max Quant" strategy doesn't work. Two years gives you the luxury of building all three sections properly.
Category-wise cutoffs for every IIM and year are on the AIR 1 Command Center, and eligibility rules differ by IIM — check the eligibility checker there before you lock your target list.
The Two-Year Roadmap
Year 1 — Class 11 (June 2026 to April 2027): Foundation.
- Rebuild Quant from first principles: arithmetic, algebra, number systems — the chapters IPMAT actually weights, taught beyond NCERT depth.
- Start a daily reading habit. Verbal is 45 questions and the single biggest section; vocabulary and reading speed compound like interest, and Class 11 starters get two full years of compounding.
- Light testing: topic tests only. No full mocks yet — there's nothing to simulate before the syllabus exists in your head.
- Time cost: 6–8 focused hours a week. School stays priority.
Year 2 — Class 12 (May 2027 to May 2028): Intensity.
- Complete the advanced syllabus by autumn, then shift to full-length mocks on the real 3 × 40-minute format.
- Mock → analysis → patch weak area → next mock. This loop, run 25+ times, is what separates a 140 from a 175.
- SA-section drills: 15 no-negative questions deserve dedicated speed training.
- Boards coexistence: IPMAT prep tapers around board exams, then sprints through March–May 2028.
What a Class 11 Foundation Batch Must Include
Evening live classes that respect school hours, with recordings for the days school wins. A curriculum sequenced for two years — not a Class 12 crash course stretched thin. Topic tests in year one, a 25+ full-mock cycle in year two with section-wise analytics. And mentors who have actually taken this exam route, because strategy advice from someone who has sat in that hall is different in kind.

FAQs
I'm starting Class 11 in 2026 — which IPMAT attempt is mine?+
IPMAT 2028. You'll pass Class 12 in 2028 and write the exam that May. That gives you roughly 24 months of preparation runway, which is the ideal window for this exam.
Is Class 11 too early to join IPMAT coaching?+
No — it's the best time. A two-year plan builds fundamentals in year one and exam intensity in year two, instead of compressing everything into Class 12 alongside boards. Verbal ability in particular rewards early starters because reading speed and vocabulary compound over time.
How many hours a week does IPMAT prep need in Class 11?+
Around 6 to 8 focused hours a week in year one — evening classes plus daily reading and weekly topic tests. The heavy lifting (full mocks, advanced problem sets) belongs to year two.
What score should an IPMAT 2028 aspirant target?+
IIM Indore's General-category overall cutoff has stayed in the 164–176 band across the last five cycles. Build your plan around clearing 175 to keep a safety margin. Sectional minimums also apply, so all three sections need attention.
Will IPMAT preparation hurt my board exams?+
Done right, it helps. IPMAT-level Quant and Verbal training strengthens school maths and English directly, and a two-year schedule is designed to taper around boards rather than collide with them.
Does the same preparation cover IPMAT Rohtak and JIPMAT too?+
Largely, yes. The syllabi overlap heavily in Quant and Verbal. An integrated programme adds the pieces specific to each exam — like DILR for JIPMAT — so one preparation opens seven-plus IIM doors.
